Insulin & Growth-Hormone Abuse in Bodybuilding
The most dangerous frontier of physique pharmacology

What can go wrong
Insulin: rapid, potentially fatal hypoglycemia (seizure, coma, death). GH: diabetes, carpal tunnel, organomegaly, possible cardiac and cancer-promotion concerns. Combined with AAS, the cumulative risk is severe.
This is something to take to a clinician. The Atlas can tell you what is known about insulin & growth-hormone abuse in bodybuilding in general. It cannot tell you what is happening in your body, and the difference matters most for exactly the symptoms that bring people to this page.
Beyond anabolic steroids, advanced bodybuilding involves two especially dangerous drugs: insulin and growth hormone (GH). Insulin is used to drive nutrient uptake but non-medical use in non-diabetics can cause profound, sometimes fatal hypoglycemia, there are documented deaths of bodybuilders who injected insulin and fell asleep. GH (and IGF-1) is used for lean mass and recovery; chronic abuse causes insulin resistance, acromegaly-like changes, organ and intestinal growth, and is implicated in 'palumboism' / 'bubble gut' (the distended abdomen seen in some elite bodybuilders, attributed by many to GH/insulin, though debated). This polypharmacy is the lethal edge of the field.
Insulin can kill a healthy bodybuilder in an afternoon.
What people take it for
These are the reasons people give for taking it. They are not effects it has been shown to have.
Safety in detail
Non-medical insulin use can cause fatal hypoglycemia within minutes to hours; growth-hormone abuse causes organ and metabolic harm. These are among the most dangerous drugs in physique culture.
- Insulin: hypoglycemic seizure, coma, death, documented bodybuilder fatalities
- GH: insulin resistance and overt diabetes
- GH: acromegaly-like bone/soft-tissue changes; possible visceral organ growth
- Combined AAS + GH + insulin: compounded cardiac and metabolic risk
Replacement is not the same as a cycle
Entirely supraphysiological/non-medical use. Insulin and GH have legitimate medical uses but are abused in bodybuilding at doses that carry acute lethal risk.
What people get wrong
Often saidInsulin is safe because it's a natural hormone
ActuallyIn a non-diabetic, injected insulin can cause fatal hypoglycemia within hours. It is one of the deadliest drugs used in bodybuilding.
Who profits, and who pushes back
Nobody is named here yet, because we have not done that work on this entry. Read that as unfinished. Somebody almost certainly sells this, and somebody almost certainly disputes it. Assume both until we have checked.
At a glance
- Insulin risk
- Fatal hypoglycemia in non-diabetics
- GH/IGF-1 risk
- Insulin resistance, organ growth, acromegalic change
- 'Bubble gut'
- Attributed to GH/insulin (debated)
