DNP & Lethal Fat-Loss Drugs
2,4-Dinitrophenol, the fat-burner that cooks you from inside
Evidence grade 4 of 5, Strong. Read how the Atlas grades evidence.
The written rationale for this grade is still being prepared.
- FDA
- Banned for human consumption (FDA)

What can go wrong
Fatal hyperthermia, multi-organ failure, cataracts, and death. The gap between an 'effective' dose and a lethal one is dangerously small, and effects can escalate after ingestion with nothing to reverse them.
This is something to take to a clinician. The Atlas can tell you what is known about dnp & lethal fat-loss drugs in general. It cannot tell you what is happening in your body, and the difference matters most for exactly the symptoms that bring people to this page.
2,4-Dinitrophenol (DNP) is an industrial chemical and historical weight-loss drug that works by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria, energy that should make ATP is released as heat instead, forcing dramatic fat loss. It was sold as a diet drug in the 1930s, caused cataracts and deaths, and was banned for human use. It persists in bodybuilding and online diet markets and continues to kill: there is no antidote, the therapeutic-to-lethal margin is razor-thin, and overdose causes uncontrollable hyperthermia (body temperatures that can exceed 110F), multi-organ failure, and death. Other dangerous fat-loss drugs in this space include clenbuterol (cardiac) and unregulated stimulant blends.
The deadliest drug in the physique world has no antidote.
What people take it for
What it is taken for. Approval, where it exists, covers only some of these.
Safety in detail
DNP has no safe dose for human consumption; it has caused numerous deaths. This entry is documentation, not guidance, DNP should never be ingested.
- Uncontrollable hyperthermia (temperatures can exceed 110F)
- No antidote; supportive care often fails
- Multi-organ failure, rhabdomyolysis, death
- Cataracts and other chronic toxicities
- Numerous documented fatalities worldwide
What people get wrong
Often saidDNP is fine if you keep the dose low
ActuallyDNP has no antidote and a razor-thin lethal margin; heat production can spiral unpredictably. It has killed users at doses they believed were safe.
Who profits, and who pushes back
Nobody is named here yet, because we have not done that work on this entry. Read that as unfinished. Somebody almost certainly sells this, and somebody almost certainly disputes it. Assume both until we have checked.
At a glance
- Mechanism
- Mitochondrial uncoupler -> heat instead of ATP
